![]() | MENO - Robert Aliaj Dragot A dynamical interaction among "prey" Birds (Flippy & Floopy) and "superpredator" the Cat (Meno) given through the emotional filter of Gala, a 20 months little girl. A response to the culture of violence that surrounds us. Outline We live within a culture marked by violence, both real and simulated, acts of violence and references to it, whether pragmatic or fictional, which dominates television, film, newspapers, magazines, video games, cartoons, books. Media systematically is bombarding us with loud, hectic and often garish images. "Meno" proposes the opposite: quiet, subtle, lingering, poetic images, which resonates and remains imprinted in the mind. Using images from the experiences of Gala's pets at her grandma's house, "Meno" re-sensitises the viewer to the significance of individual gestures and the intimate poetry. Cat and Birds in Peace. A cat and a bird, traditional adversaries, eat aside each other. Though it is evident they are not the best of friends, they mind their own business and manage to co-exist cooly and love one another. It is a potent metaphor for learning to live with each other. In contrast to what one would expect, there is no suspense raised by this -usually- dangerous situation. A humorous approach on the civilized behaviour, and on the importance of peaceful coexistence despite difference. Robert Aliaj Dragot Brussels 2007 Website: http://www.dragot.com |

![]() | STOLEN MOMENTS - Robert Aliaj Dragot People have nostalgia for the past. These are weblog times we're living in. The state of being called nostalgia has a history fraught with ambiguity and poetical connotation. In the late 17th century, nostalgic reminiscences were thought to be the symptoms of a deadly disease that shook one's mind and body. Today, we view nostalgia not as a medical condition, but as a bittersweet recollection of one's past joys and sorrows--the memories and treasures of an earlier self. And yet, there remains a category of individuals for whom such recollection can be seriously problematic: Immigrants. Migration creates a special dynamic between the real home and a sense of belonging to far away places, where the family originates from. STOLEN MOMENTS considers such questions as, Does attachment to one's native culture preclude or merely influence adaptation into a new culture? Do we fashion our identity in interdependence with others, or do we shape it in a non-contingent frame? Is it possible to assimilate in an unfamiliar world without risking self-alienation? Nostalgia is both the poison and the cure in such situations. STOLEN MOMENTS illustrates how and why the cultural adjustment of immigrants can only happen when personal identity is understood as a quest for continuity in one's life story, even alongside the most radical cultural rupture. Ultimately, reflection on the nostalgic experience reveals insights into the nature of the self and its dynamic engagement with otherness and difference. The film is realized through a continuous juxtaposition of media footage and filmed footage depicting scenes from the life of the filmmaker's friends and also from people living on the margins of our society. At the same time three interviews with a war reporter, an American federal agent and a university professor - friend of the leader of Greek terrorist group 17November - try to contribute to the dialogue as the various issues emerge from the very material of the film. ![]() | VISUM FUR EUROPA - Irena Paskali I was invited to an in Residence Program of an Austrian artist which would have lasted for three months. However the Austrian Embassy in Macedonia gave me permission to stay in Austria only for 30 days. I was told that I could not prolong my visa in Austria; I rather had to go to the Austrian Embassy in Munich for new arrangements. So I decided to film this European Paradox. ![]() | EAST T(W)O WEST - Irena Paskali "It seems that all my life I'm dancing on a wire stretched between two fortresses" Departure: The trip from East to West. It is always like a stretched rope which is unsecured and you can easily fall and get lost. The rope merges, serves for transport, but it is not secured. Arrival: I want to present the impact of the political information which traps us, limit us. Here are the meaningful social-political scenes starting from the past up to today. Political is everything for us. It is the morning, noon, evening, mum, dad. It is our life's circulation. Survival: East arrived in the West. Bare footed. Will he loose himself or has he found his better road? A question to which I personally do not have an answer. What do you think about that? Duration: 4:46min.
